W.A. Mozart´s opera The Magic Flute was a collaboration with students from different study programs of Novia University of Applied Sciences, Centria University of Applied Sciences and YA Vocational College of Ostrobothnia in Pietarsaari and Kokkola. The directors were Mats Holmqvist and Birthe Wingren.
This version of the Magic Flute was about children who started to play in an attic and created the plot of the opera using their imagination. Our class started by working in four smaller groups to make a first suggestion of what the scenography could look like. My group planned an attic full of storage boxes, chairs, and other objects you can find in an attic. All the objects were supposed to look grey and dull. But when the children started to play, the attic suddenly turned colorful to symbolize the children’s bustling imagination. The directors chose the idea of my group after which the whole class started to develop the idea and plan the scenography more into details. This course also included building the scenography.
